Diagnostic testing (1617058)

In line with the Freedom of Information Act (2000) we would like to understand the extent of access and referral to faecal calprotectin (FCP) testing as ordered by GPs per practice by your CCG, in order to assist GPs to better differentiate between irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and suspected irritable bowel disease (IBD).

We would be grateful if you could respond to the following questions:

1. In October 2013, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommended that FCP testing could be used to support clinicians in differentiating IBD from IBS*. Does your CCG currently offer FCP testing as part of their routine clinical practice within primary care?

NHS Calderdale CCG does not currently offer FCP testing in Primary Care.

2. How many FCP tests (either point of care (POC) or laboratory based FCP testing) were requested by GPs per practice population within your CCG between 1st April 2015 and 30th March 2016?

NHS Calderdale CCG does not currently offer FCP testing in Primary Care.

a. How many of these tests were recorded as positive/high risk?

NHS Calderdale CCG does not currently offer FCP testing in Primary Care.

3. How many GP referrals were made to a gastroenterologist for specialist assessment between 1st April 2015 and 30th March 2016?

NHS Calderdale CCG does not hold information in relation to reason for referral.

The total number of Gastroenterology 1st Outpatients where the referral source was a GP between 1st April 2015 and 30th March 2016 was 1,373.

4. How many GP referrals were made to endoscopy services between 1st April 2015 and 30th March 2016?

The majority of endoscopies are carried out in a Daycase setting. The dataset for Daycase activity does not contain a source of referral field; therefore, this information is not available.

Some Diagnostic Endoscopies are carried out in Outpatients. The total number of diagnostic endoscopies in an outpatient setting (across all specialties) requested by a GP was 66.
This is based on the following:-
– Diagnostic endoscopic examination of bladder
– Diagnostic endoscopic examination of lower bowel using fibreoptic sigmoidoscope

a. Of these referrals how many were diagnosed with IBD and how many with IBS?
