Preparing for EU Exit

Preparing for EU Exit

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) is leading the response to an EU Exit across the health and care sector.

DHSC is also the key contact for the sector with the Department for Exiting the EU (DExEU) and the Cabinet Office.

NHS England and NHS Improvement are working closely with DHSC to best prepare the NHS.

Information for patients

Patient-facing messages will continue to be published on the nhs.uk website under the appropriate section. There are specified sections on the NHS England website dedicated to getting your medicines and medicines frequently asked questions in the event of a no deal EU exit.

NHS Confederation regularly publish EU Exit updates on their website.

People returning to live in the UK can find more information on the Gov.UK website.

Information for the health and care sector

All information published by DHSC – and other parts of Government – on EU Exit can be viewed here.

Any information published by NHS England and NHS Improvement will be available on the NHS England web pages.

Reciprocal Care

Currently the UK and the EU Member States reimburse each other for the healthcare of its own nationals living in, working in or visiting each other’s country. If the UK leaves without a deal, then there will be changes to healthcare access for people living in and travelling to and from the EU.

written ministerial statement published on 19 March 2019 gives an update on plans for the continuity of reciprocal healthcare arrangements in the event the UK exits the EU without a deal.
