Doctors are reminding patients of a few simple steps they can take to stay healthy over the Easter holidays.

“Being prepared and knowing where to go for treatment over the Easter break when GP surgeries are closed can make a big difference to your health,” said Dr Alan Brook, local GP and Chair of NHS Calderdale Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).

“You can treat many minor ailments with a supply of over-the-counter medicines, which you’ll find at your local pharmacy or shop.

“Pharmacists are qualified medical professionals, and if you start to feel unwell they will be able to give you practical advice. Medical advice is available from the NHS 111 service at any time, and the NHS Symptoms Checker on www.nhs.uk can also advise people what kind of treatment they may need.

“It’s important that people know who to speak to so they know where to get the treatment they need, and don’t turn up to A&E when it’s not an emergency.”

A list of the pharmacies in Calderdale open on Friday 25, Sunday 27 and Monday 28 March can be found on the Calderdale CCG website: www.calderdaleccg.nhs.uk.

The pharmacy is also the perfect place to stock up medicine cabinets. Useful items to have handy include:

  • pain relief such as paracetamol and ibuprofen (aspirin should not be given to children under 16 or to people with asthma)
  • paediatric paracetamol oral suspension or ibuprofen syrups for children
  • cough and cold remedies
  • sore throat remedies
  • anti-diarrhoea treatments
  • antihistamines
  • indigestion remedies
  • simple dressings and plasters.

There are a number of options available to patients who need care, and NHS Calderdale CCG want people to choose the right option for them this Easter:

Common ailments – most of these, such as coughs and colds, can’t be treated with antibiotics and are best dealt with at home with rest and a well-stocked medicine cabinet.

Pharmacists – your local pharmacist is a trained healthcare professional and can give you advice on common illnesses without the need to go to your GP.

NHS 111 – call when you need medical advice fast, but it is not an emergency

GP – if you have a persistent illness that won’t go away, make an appointment with your GP or visit your local out-of-hours service.

Accident and Emergency – A&E and the 999 ambulance service should only be used in a serious or life-threatening situation, such as:

  • loss of consciousness
  • acute confused state and fits that are not stopping
  • persistent, severe chest pain
  • breathing difficulties
  • severe bleeding that cannot be stopped
  • severe allergic reactions
  • severe burns or scalds.

In the case of suspected heart attack or stroke call 999 immediately. Every second counts with these conditions.

“Demand on Emergency services increases dramatically during holiday periods,” said Dr Brook, “so we’d like people to ask themselves ‘does this illness or injury really need emergency treatment?

“Sometimes self-care is the answer, especially for coughs and colds that can’t be treated with antibiotics anyway.”
