Over the summer we’ve been listening to the views of people who use, and the staff that provide, Calderdale and Kirklees’ wheelchair services to see how these should be delivered in the future, and how things can be improved now.
At our latest planning meeting on 24 October in Brighouse, service users, their families and carers had their say on who should receive wheelchair services, the assessment, appointment, maintenance and repair processes, and how their voices can continue to be heard.
The views given in the workshop will be used in developing a specification for a new service, which will launch on 1 October 2019 following a procurement process to establish a provider to deliver it.
Dr Farrukh Javid, Clinical Lead for wheelchair services in Calderdale and Kirklees, said: “We’ve been engaging and working with a wide range of stakeholders in Calderdale and Kirklees, including people who use wheelchairs, carers, relatives, the voluntary and community sector, and health and education professionals.
“What they’ve told the CCGs has been extremely valuable and useful. It has helped us understand what’s important to them and what the service needs to achieve with the money that’s available.
“Now we’re planning what the service will look like in the future, and want to involve service users in planning and decision-making to make sure that we’re giving people the support they need.”
