Gluten-free products: prescribing in Calderdale

Following the decision made at its Governing Body meeting in June 2018, and in line with the Department of Health decision, Calderdale CCG recommends that only gluten-free bread loaves and mixes are prescribed to patients who have been diagnosed with Coeliac Disease.

We have received some questions from our GP member practices since this decision about whether the guidance on prescription quantities that we have previously used is still relevant.

Following consideration of previous guidance from both  Coeliac UK  and PrescQIPP*,  Calderdale CCG has agreed that our Coeliac patients should be able to receive  up to 8 units per month of bread and mix on prescription, as a contribution to their gluten-free diet.

This limit would support coeliac patients in maintaining a healthy diet and is in line with the previous decision made by the Governing Body to continue offering certain gluten-free products on prescription. This guidance will also promote a consistent approach across the CCG reducing postcode variation.

If you would like to raise an issue or query in regards to the prescribing of gluten-free products in Calderdale please contact us, or speak to staff at your GP practice.
